| In
2001, Oxnard became the site of a "dead line" of surplus
SP and UP power destined for the scrapper. The massive influx
of new SD70Ms and AC4400s led to this unprecedented glut of older
locomotives. When taggers, thieves and hobos began to take their
toll, UP in their wisdom decided to move the Dead Line from Oxnard
Yard to the old Proctor & Gamble Spur south of the 101 Freeway.
Although UP's intention seemed to be to "hide" these
units from the riff-raff, the secluded spur actually gave them
more privacy to do their dirty work. The units made their final
voyage to the scrapper in early 2003. Photo by Robert Cheatham |
